This Peppermint Syrup Recipe is made with only 3 simple ingredients and takes just minutes to make! It is the perfect addition to coffee, hot chocolate and cocktails.
Starbucks Peppermint drinks such as Peppermint Mocha, peppermint hot chocolate and peppermint frappuccino are a classic during the festive season. But indulging that peppermint craving can add up in cost and the holidays are expensive enough. Now you can use your own homemade peppermint syrup to make all of the peppermint-flavored drinks your heart desires at just a fraction of the cost.
The beauty of this recipe is that it is incredibly easy to make, uses simple ingredients you likely already have on hand, and takes just 10 minutes to do. It’s perfect to have on hand and use when you want.
This Peppermint Syrup Recipe is one I whip up often, especially because my husband loves peppermint flavored everything. He especially loves when I use it to make Peppermint Mochas! This homemade peppermint syrup recipe makes it possible to make all of your favorite beverages at home and easily adjust the amount of syrup to suit your own tastes.
If you are hosting a get-together this holiday season or just want to jazz up brunch on Christmas morning, I highly recommend having a bottle of peppermint syrup on hand to add to coffee, hot chocolate, or cocktails. It’s an easy way to add instant festive cheer.
It also makes a great homemade gift for a coffee lover. Just think how great it would be to receive a gift basket containing a bottle of this homemade simple syrup with a package of ground coffee and some hot chocolate packets.
While the holiday season is the time of year we make this the most, we also love it in the summer months added to lemonades, seltzers, and iced tea.
Ingredients in Peppermint Syrup
This minty syrup requires just 3 ingredients:
- Water: 1 cup of water.
- Sugar: 1 cup granulated sugar. The ratio of sugar to water is 1:1 so you can adjust this recipe to make more or less, keeping in mind that you need equal parts of both.
- Peppermint extract: 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract. (You can use pure peppermint extract or substitute a blend such as peppermint and mint extract depending on your personal tastes. Use a good quality peppermint extract for the best flavor.
How to make this Peppermint Syrup Recipe
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, add all of the syrup ingredients except the peppermint extract. Simmer together for about 5 minutes, whisking often until the sugar is dissolved.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the peppermint extract. Let it cool.
That’s it! Easy right? Now you just need to add this delicious syrup it to your favorite drink and enjoy. You can easily adjust the amount of syrup used to suit your own tastes.
How to Store Peppermint Syrup
Peppermint syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. I like to place it in a glass jar such as a mason jar or similar and label it so it is ready to go.
Homemade peppermint syrup can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Plastic containers are preferable to glass if you are freezing since frozen liquid can expand and cause it to shatter. If you wish to freeze it, though, I highly recommend measuring out tablespoon portions and pouring it into an ice cube tray. That way you can easily defrost as many portions as you need when you want them. Tip: You can also pop a frozen minty ice cube into summer drinks like lemonade, iced tea.
