Turkey Gravy from Drippings

This turkey gravy recipe uses pan drippings to make a flavourful gravy. If there are not enough drippings or none at all, you can easily substitute chicken or turkey stock instead!

There is no better meal than a roast turkey with all the trimmings! I look forward to the holidays every year so that I can enjoy this wonderful meal! Since I was tall enough to see over the counter, I was always at my moms side preparing Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey dinners with her. Preparing the stuffing, stuffing the bird, or whipping up the creamiest mashed potatoes were my favourite things to do!

Since moving into my own home, I have always taken on the job of hosting Thanksgiving on my own. Years of experience at my moms side prepared me for this and it truly is an absolute joy to do. I do everything as I have learned from my mom. The only exception is the gravy.

For years now, I have taken on making my own gravy from the turkey drippings. My turkey roasts away in the oven for hours with about an inch of water beneath it to keep it moist and provide some yummy liquid for basting the turkey as it cooks. Why not put that leftover liquid to good use? That’s just what I do in this recipe! It’s flavourful and delicious so, for me, there is no other option for a turkey dinner. Its also super easy to do! Just whip up a roux with butter and flour, stir in the strained drippings and season to taste!

How to make turkey gravy from drippings

To make this gravy, you will need:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 4 cups pan drippings, run through a sieve (or chicken or turkey stock)
  • salt and pepper to taste

In a saucepan, melt the butter. Whisk in flour to create a roux. Slowly add the pan drippings and continue whisking until heated through and thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

That is it, folks! Truly super simple to do. No need to mess around with canned or powdered gravy mixes anymore when you can have a rich, flavourful gravy like this that is seriously just as easy to do!

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!

Lots of love,

Cathy
