How to make Valentine’s Day Brownies
The full instructions are in the recipe card below, but essentially, these homemade brownies come down to these simple steps:
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, add the flour, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.
- Prepare the wet ingredients: In a medium saucepan, add the butter, oil, espresso powder, and cocoa powder. Melt the butter and simultaneously whisk together with the other ingredients over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the sugar and stir in. Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Mix the wet and dry ingredients together: In a stand mixer (or mixing bowl with a hand mixer), add the saucepan ingredients. With the mixer running at medium speed, add the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time. Slowly add the dry ingredients and stop the mixer as soon as they are incorporated (careful not to over mix).
- Pour, sprinkle and bake: Pour the batter into the lined baking dish. Cover with the sprinkles (as much as desired). Bake for 23-26 minutes or until the edges are firm and the center is set. Let the brownies cool before slicing.
Tips for making the best homemade brownies
- Use the scoop and level method for measuring the flour. In order to ensure you are using the correct amount of flour, scoop the flour with a spoon into your measuring cup and then use the back of a butter knife to level the flour before adding.
- Be careful not to over mix the batter. As with most baked goods, over mixing your batter will produce more dense baked goods. Stir until everything is incorporated and then stop.
- You can make this by hand. I use a stand mixer for my brownies but that isn’t necessary. You can use a hand mixer or even mix it by hand if that is easier for you.
- Watch the bake time to ensure your brownies don’t over bake. Oven temperatures can vary so I recommend checking in on your brownies at about 20-22 minutes into the baking process.
How to store leftover brownies
Leftover brownies can be stored at room temperature, wrapped in plastic food wrap or in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out. Brownies should be cooled to room temperature before wrapping in food wrap. I personally think individually wrapping them preserves their moisture the best.
Can you freeze leftover brownies?
Yes, you can freeze brownies. In order to preserve their moisture, wrap cooled brownies in plastic food wrap and then place in a freezer safe bag or container.
When you want to enjoy a brownie, simply unwrap the brownie and set it out on a plate until it comes to room temperature. Impatient brownie lovers can speed this process up by popping it in the microwave for a bit if you just can’t wait (speaking from experience)!
I hope you and your sweetie enjoy this recipe!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
