This healthy apple nachos recipe is a quick and delicious snack! These apple slices drizzled with caramel are perfect for kids and adults! Read on to learn how to make this yummy treat and for my favourite way to prevent apples from browning!
Its apple season and we have been snacking on apples daily in our home. While there is nothing wrong with crunching on a fresh apple, I decided to make our apple snack extra special today by turning them into apple nachos!
So simple to do and still healthy, though the addition of some caramel and sprinkles do make them feel more like a treat! Sprinkles make everything better don’t they? They are an instant mood lifter!
While we are two grown adults (though that’s debatable at times) snacking on these today, this recipe is especially popular with kiddos! Definitely a good way to ensure they are eating their fruit! Seriously, as far as afterschool snacks go, this is definitely something you can feel good about serving up! Waaay healthier than potato chips!
How to prevent apples from browning
One of the most annoying things for me is cutting up fruit only to see it go brown before I get a chance to serve it up! Apples are one of those culprits! As a kid, I used to refuse to eat browned apples cause I was convinced they had gone bad. While I know that’s not the case and that its just what happens when they are exposed to oxygen, its still not very pleasing to look at a brown apple.
So how do you prevent them from browning?
I have tried many different methods in the past, some of which worked and others that failed to keep the apples from browning. While some of the methods did work such as using saltwater solutions or lemon juice, I found that they changed the taste of the apples and I wasn’t happy about that.
So what’s the best way method that doesn’t change the taste?
The answer to my problem was sitting in my cupboard all along! Honey! Sweet, delicious honey! I dissolve 2 tablespoons of honey into a cup of water and dip my slices in it. It does the trick! It’s sweet and so it doesn’t add an unpleasant taste to the apples and it also provides a coating on the apple slices that prevents the oxygen from causing them to brown!
Who knew it was that easy?!
How to make Apple Nachos
Get ready for the easiest recipe! No cooking and, although I did give some measurements as a guide, you really don’t need them. Top them as you please with as much or as little of each topping as you want!
To make my nacho platter, I used:
- 4 apples
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons sprinkles
- caramel, for drizzling
Other optional toppings:
- almond slices
- melted peanut butter
- chocolate sauce
Stir honey into a bowl of water (about 1 cup of water) to dissolve it.
Core and slice apples. Place the apple slices into the bowl in batches, letting them sit for about 30 seconds or so. Remove and plate the apple slices on a platter.
Sprinkle apples with chocolate chips and sprinkles. Drizzle with as much caramel sauce as desired. Serve!
That’s it!
I hope you enjoy this simple treat!
