Blueberry Gin & Tonic

The classic Gin & Tonic gets an upgrade with the addition of a delicious blueberry simple syrup and fresh lemon juice. This Blueberry Gin & Tonic is the perfect cocktail to sip on a hot summer day!

At long last, warmer weather is upon us and we can finally basque in the sunshine! Inevitably, this means more time on the patio and in our home, that sometimes means enjoying a nice cocktail while taking in the views in our backyard.

If you like sweet, fruity cocktails, this Blueberry Gin & Tonic is definitely one to add to your list. It’s perfect for summer BBQs or nights on the patio. It’s also a great way to take advantage of blueberry season, when those plump, juicy little berries are their peak!

This cocktail gets its blueberry flavor through a homemade blueberry simple syrup. In addition to the blueberry syrup, the drink gets another fruit infusion through some freshly squeezed lemon juice. Blueberries and lemons are a lovely combination and so it felt fitting to celebrate them together in a cocktail.

While fresh berries are always preferred, you truly can go ahead and whip this cocktail up using frozen blueberries too. Frozen blueberries tend to give off more color when turned into a simple syrup so if you want a deep, purple cocktail, you may even decide to use frozen berries instead.

If you are serving this at a get-together including friends or family that cannot consume alcohol, you can omit the gin and serve this up as a nice little mocktail.

Ingredients Blueberry Gin & Tonic

To make this fruity g & t, you will need:

  • Blueberries: Fresh blueberries or frozen blueberries can be used.

  • Sugar: Used to make the blueberry syrup. The sugar dissolves when heated with the water and blueberries, making it a great way to sweeten up a cocktail without any sugar granules sinking to the bottom.

  • Water: Equal parts of sugar and water are used to make simple syrup.

  • Gin: The G in this G & T.

  • Lemon: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds another fruity element to this drink. I highly recommend using fresh lemon juice over any bottled juice.

  • Tonic water

  • Ice

Optional garnishes for this blueberry cocktail

While you can forego the garnishes for this cocktail, I think adding them gives this blueberry g & t an extra special vibe. To garnish the drink, I used:

  • lemon slice
  • fresh blueberries
  • a sprig of rosemary (you can also use thyme, or mint)

Making your Blueberry Gin and Tonic Cocktail

  1. Make the simple syrup: In a saucepan, add all of the ingredients for the blueberry syrup. Simmer it over medium heat for a couple of minutes, until the sugar dissolves. Strain and let cool.

  2. Prepare the cocktail glass. Prepare a cocktail glass with ice. If using garnishes, add a slice of lemon, some fresh blueberries and a sprig of rosemary to the cocktail glass.

  3. Mix the cocktail ingredients. Add the gin, blueberry syrup, lemon juice and some ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake to mix the cocktail ingredients. Strain the cocktail mixture into the prepared cocktail glass and top it with tonic water.

Enjoy responsibly!
