Ingredients needed for this recipe:

  • Egg noodles: One package or 340g of egg noodles is used in this recipe. I used broad egg noodles but you can use any type you prefer.

  • Olive oil

  • Veggies: Onion, carrot and celery make up the veggies in this recipe. You can also add or substitute other veggies such as frozen peas and corn, broccoli, etc.

  • Ground beef: Lean ground beef or a beef and pork mix is used in this recipe. I use 3/4 of a pound of ground meat for this recipe but you can increase it to a full pound.

  • Flour: used to thicken the sauce. It is added to the ground beef and vegetable mixture before the liquid is added. As the liquid simmers, the flour will help thicken it.

  • Seasoning: nutmeg, allspice, salt and pepper.

  • Beef broth

  • Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce: added flavour.

  • Milk and sour cream: can omit for dairy-free recipe.

  • Parsley: added before serving.

Note: Ingredient quantities and full instructions are in the recipe card at the end of this post.

How to make Easy Stove Top Ground Beef and Noodles

  1. Boil the noodles: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook egg noodles according to package directions. Drain.

  2. Saute the vegetables: Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large skillet and add the onions, carrot, and celery. Sauté for several minutes until the vegetables begin to soften and the onions turn translucent.

  3. Cook the ground beef: Add the ground beef to the sauteed vegetables and cook until browned and cooked through, being sure to break up any pieces as it cooks.

  4. Add flour: Add the flour over the ground beef and stir to coat it, cooking for 1 minute.

  5. Add the liquid and seasonings: Add the beef broth, Dijon mustard, milk, Worcestershire sauce, nutmeg and all spice and continue to stir the mixture until it begins to thicken. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove the ground beef sauce from the heat and mix in the sour cream.

  6. Toss it all together: Add the drained egg noodles to the skillet and stir to coat the noodles with the beef sauce. Sprinkle with parsley before serving. [Note: If your skillet is not large enough, you can place the egg noodles into the larger pot and then top them with the beef mixture.]

Tips and Substitutions

  • Add more vegetables: My recipe uses onions, carrots and celery however, you can easily add in more vegetables like broccoli, peppers, frozen peas and spinach. Peppers can be sautéed alongside the onions, carrots, and celery. If you are adding broccoli, you can cook it along with the egg noodles. Spinach or frozen peas can be stirred in towards the end as they do not need much cooking time.

  • Swap in frozen vegetables instead: To simplify this recipe, you can skip chopping up any veggies at all and just toss in a frozen vegetable mix with carrots, peas, and corn.

  • Keep things dairy-free: I added milk and sour cream in my ground beef sauce as I was aiming for a Swedish meatball gravy type of sauce but you can omit them altogether. I have made this without the milk ingredients and it is equally delicious!

What to serve with Stove Top Ground Beef and Noodles

The beauty of this recipe is that it is a complete, well-rounded meal on its own. That said, I love to serve it along with a nice side salad and some bread to soak up that extra sauce! If you don’t have any bread on hand, my go to recipe for Easy Dinner Rolls is ready in just 45 minutes!

Storing leftovers

Once cooled, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. To reheat, you can add the leftover beef and noodles to a skillet and add a couple tablespoons of water. Stir until heated through. Alternatively, leftovers can be warmed in the microwave, making this dish great for leftover work lunches.

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do!
