Split pea soup is a classic, comforting meal that is loved by all. It’s made extra tasty with the addition of ham which pairs well with split peas and adds lots of additional flavor to this soup. This recipe is a favorite of ours, especially when we have leftover ham to use.

Using a crockpot makes this recipe as easy as it gets. Simply dump all the ingredients into your slow cooker and let it do the rest. Hours later, you come back to a delicious, no-fuss meal.

Although this is a complete meal as it is, some crusty bread or a nice side salad make this soup an ultra satisfying dinner.

Ingredients in Slow Cooker Split Pea and Ham Soup

  • Split peas: Yellow split peas or green split peas can be used in this recipe. I opt for a French-Canadian inspired soup which uses yellow split peas. Yellow split peas have a milder, earthy flavor. Green split peas are just as delicious and offer a slightly sweeter flavor.

  • Ham: This recipe is a great way to use up leftover ham. I often keep a stash of leftover diced ham in our freezer for just this reason. Using a ham bone is another great way to add more flavor to this soup.

  • Veggies: Celery, carrots, and onion.

  • Seasoning: Dried thyme, bay leaves, salt and pepper.

  • Broth: Chicken broth gives good flavor for this soup, though you can easily substitute a vegetable broth.

What to serve with Slow Cooker Split Pea and Ham Soup

This slow cooker split pea soup is hearty on its own with a hunk of bread to sop up all the creamy soup. I often make my Ham and Cheese Biscuits when I don’t have bread on hand since they are so quick to whip up and also add a little more ham flavor. These Easy Dinner Rolls also can be whipped up in just 45 minutes!

A crunchy, green side salad, like a garden salad or Healthy Caesar Salad, is also a great accompaniment.

Storing leftovers

Once cooled, leftovers can be placed in an airtight container and stored in the fridge for a few days.

This soup can also be frozen and reheated for future meals. To freeze, place cooled soup into a freezer safe container or a freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to 3 months.
