Simple to make and absolutely delicious, cinnamon butter is perfect on pancakes, toast, and so much more!
Slathering butter on a hot biscuit, a stack of pancakes, or my morning toast is a simple pleasure that makes these simple treats so much better. When that butter is flavored with delicious cinnamon spice and a bit of sweetness, it makes those simple treats extra delicious!
This cinnamon butter recipe is easy to make but makes such a huge impact wherever you use it. An already delicious stack of pancakes gets so much tastier with that sweet cinnamon butter flavor. And it doesn’t stop there. Waffles, scones, muffins, biscuits, and your morning bagel can all benefit from a pat of this delicious butter.
The inspiration for this butter came after going out for breakfast with my hubby recently. We ordered a side of pancakes and it came with a delicious cinnamon butter and I instantly knew I had been depriving myself of this simple luxury when making breakfast at home.
This flavorful butter spread is incredibly easy to make and easily adjustable to suit your own preferences. That means you can make your perfectly spiced compound butter at home in no time at all.
Why we love this recipe:
- It’s delicious to spread on a wide variety of things including scones, pancakes, and muffins.
- You only require a few simple ingredients that you likely already have on hand.
- This recipe is very easy to whip up.
- This recipe is easily adjusted to suit your taste. Want a sweeter butter? Add more sugar. Not enough cinnamon spice? Sprinkle in more!
Ingredients in Cinnamon Butter
- Salted butter: room temperature. To make the cinnamon butter, the butter needs to be softened first to make it easy to whip. Be sure to use a salted butter that is not overly salted, otherwise it will become too overpowering.
- Sugar: I use powdered sugar aka icing sugar or confectioner’s sugar. If you wish to make this recipe with honey instead, you can replace a portion of the sugar with honey (e.g. replace half of the sugar with honey). This will give it a delicious honey butter flavor. The sweetness of this cinnamon butter is on the lighter side and not very overpowering, though detectable. If you want a sweeter butter, you can increase the amount of sugar in the recipe.
- Ground cinnamon

How to make Cinnamon Butter
- Throw ingredients in a bowl. Place all of the ingredients in a medium mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer.
- Blend. Blend the ingredients until they are well combined and smooth. If you are not using a stand mixer, use a hand mixer to do this. Taste and adjust the sugar and cinnamon to suit your own taste.
- Serve. Serve on pancakes, waffles, toast, banana bread, or other baked goods.
Storing your cinnamon butter
If you are making this cinnamon butter in advance or simply want to store leftovers, I recommend placing the butter in a small shallow bowl covered with plastic wrap or in a small airtight container and storing it in the fridge. This will keep your butter fresh for longer than keeping it at room temperature.
When you know you want to use the cinnamon butter, you can leave it out at room temperature for about an hour to soften it and make it spreadable again.
Can you freeze butter?
I freeze butter all the time. While I haven’t frozen this cinnamon butter specifically, I imagine it would freeze just as well. To freeze it, I would wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then pop it into a freezer bag to prevent freezer burn.
To thaw butter, I place it in the fridge to slowly thaw overnight. Then when you want to use this butter, you can take your fridge-temperature butter and leave it out to soften as you would normally.
What to serve this cinnamon butter with
- Pancakes: Simple Buttermilk Pancakes or even flavored pancakes like Pumpkin Pancakes or Chocolate Chip Ricotta Pancakes get a flavor boost from this delicious spread.
- Waffles: Simple Oat Waffles get even tastier with a pat of this tasty sweet butter! We also love it with Sweet Potato Waffles, Pumpkin Spice Waffles, and Banana Nut Waffles.
- Muffins: We especially love a smear of butter on Corn Muffins, Apple Oat Muffins, Bran Muffins, and Banana Muffins.
- Scones: A scone is delicious on its own but even better with butter! Love it with Pumpkin Scones especially!
- Breads: Plain toast gets a boost with this tasty butter. We can’t wait to try it with our Pumpkin Dinner Rolls and Homemade Crescent Rolls next.
- Quick breads: Imagine how good this would be on a slice of Banana Bread! Also love the idea of spreading this onto my next loaf of Sweet Potato Bread or Pumpkin Bread.
Cinnamon Butter FAQs
Yes, you can certainly use unsalted butter to make your cinnamon butter if you prefer. You can add a pinch of salt to the recipe if that is the case to draw out more flavor from the butter.
Yes, you can! While I prefer using confectioners sugar because its ground to a fine powder and melds perfectly with the butter (i.e. you can’t see or feel any granules), you can opt for another sweetener. Brown sugar, granulated sugar, and even honey can be used in place of the confectioners sugar.
While I haven’t attempted it myself, this cinnamon butter should be easy to whip up with a vegan butter. If you wish to keep this recipe vegan, ensure you do not use honey as a sweetener and stick to sugar.
